I’m pretty sure this service pet’s face looks familiar to you. She’s called Sparkles, although her name probably won’t tell you anything, just another adorable name for another cute little puppygirl. 

But if I tell you that she used to be known as Leah-Jane Kennelly? I know, you’ve heard that name before but you still don’t place it. You may remember this name for that budding actress who, only four years ago, hogged movie theatres and the front pages of the tabloids… Her first role was at the age 9, playing the youngest of the Pattersons in that family sitcom that was broadcasted on channel 7, and that is still repeat during the early morning hours in that same channel after more than ten years after finishing its broadcast, although it is true that long before she worked in several TV ads for baby food when it was just a baby, they can still be found on the web, if you have the time and interest to look for them. But if you ask anyone, they’ll tell you that Leah-Jane Kennelly is much better known for “Little Troublemakers”, a light teen comedy in which she plays both main characters, two 15-year-old twins separated at birth by an implausible hospital negligence and who years later reunited again during their summer holidays, with funny result. Everyone thinks this cheesy film is hilarious. Even me, I admit it. 

The truth is that Sparkles, I mean… Leah-Jane Kennelly, had a short but very active career, her wide smile, her adorable freckles and her recognizable and beautiful green eyes became synonymous of success. Blockbuster movies, series that broke share and even shows with her name, a true reference for thousands of teenagers (today we would call her influencer) but as it happens with many other young stars, unfortunately, fame didn’t take long to go to her head. Her newly acquired freedom at the age of 18 led her to surround herself with bad companies and make terrible decisions. Scandals continually revealed by the media and a diva’s own attitudes during the shootings made her not only lose dozens of new roles and opportunities to grieve of her parents and agents, but also end her brand new teenage popularity overnight. In less than two years no talent agency wanted her as a client and no film production company trusted her anymore. 

You may think that it was the same thing that led her to her current situation, and even knowing some of the scandals attributed to the actress, I would agree to say that she deserved it if it were so, but despite the unique nature of her past her story is no different than that of many other puppygirls. When she turned 20 she had the nasty privilege of being one of those chosen in the mandatory pet service draft of that year.

I suppose if her parents had wished they could have interceded for her, made sure the compulsory pettification service didn’t turn her into what she is today, but let’s face it… Leah-Jane Kennelly had completely wrecked her image herself. Her acting career was over, as was her two-legged future. So they did the wisest thing, contacting the producers and television channels she had worked on and together hiding the fact that her beloved daughter had entered the pet service program. The actress’s reputation would be protected and they could enjoy the money earned by her daughter. Was a win-win situation for everyone, well, everyone except Sparkles, of course. 

The transformation from Leah-Jane Kennelly to Sparkles would easily give me to fill pages and pages with interesting stories, and I might do so at another time, but it goes without saying that the actress’s arrogance and rebelliousness, characteristic of a life that no longer belonged to her, did not help her to have the easiest of trainings. That same attitude earned her more of an unpleasant punishment, and also, five more years in pet service, but the compulsory pettification service is not proud of its professional trainers for nothing, and this “Little Troublemaker” soon forgot what it was like to see the world from any perspective higher than the waist of her handlers. After a long time, Leah-Jane Kennelly became a good girl again. 

More than three years have passed since Sparkles was adopted by her owner, and little is left of that proud and haughty actress, now she is an obedient and spoiled pet who likes to do some mischief with the hope that her puppy green eyes, which so many times before have dazzled the audience in theaters, now save her from a well-deserved spank. Sparkles has everything a little puppygirl like her could wish for: a comfortable and fluffy basket at the foot of her owner’s bed, three meals a day in nice bowls with her name on them, lots of toys that help her pass the time when her owner doesn’t pay attention to her and, although she doesn’t like it, a visit every two months to the vet to make sure everything is in order. She couldn’t be more pampered. After a life where both your parents and your agents always took advantage of your fame and fortune, for once it’s nice to know that someone loves you for who you are and not for what you’re worth. 

To tell the truth, her owner is so proud of her pet that just a few months ago he had agreed with her vet that the time had come to breed her up, so as the last whim and being aware that Sparkles missed her previous life (the attention of the cameras and the heat of the spotlights) he decided to register her for the casting for the last “Happy Tails” ad before filling her tummy with his offspring. And although she had to swallow the little pride she still had left during the shooting, like the bone-shaped dry feed from her bowl, Sparkles impressed everyone present, so much so that she is now the adorable face of this well-known brand of puppygirl food, and not only in TV ads, but in all those cans and packages you’ve surely seen in the supermarket in the pet aisle. I warned you that this face was familiar… 

It’s curious that, just like years ago, all Sparkles needed for her career as an “actress” to take off one more time was to announce food again, even if this time she is acting on all fours and barking her script lines, and now that the rumors of the recording of the sequel to the “Patterson Family” are on everyone’s lips, it wouldn’t be so strange if they decided to have one of the stars of the old cast again. I’m sure Sparkles will play the role of the family’s little petgirl excellently, and after all, there are still four long years left before she can fulfill her owner’s wish and give him the litter he wants. 

Leah-Jane Kennelly always liked to be a referent for dozens of thousands of teenagers, now Sparkles may have the opportunity to be a referent for thousands of other puppygirls like her.
